Persepolis critique
Novel vs. Film
Persepolis is an eye-opening,
charming and heart-warming story of a young girl’s journey. She is a native
Iranian and the child of a family entrenched in the struggles of the Iranian
people during the revolution and war between Iran and Iraq during the early 80’s.
Her parents send her to Europe and she is accepted among “the marginals”. It’s
fun to see how this girl is influenced along the way by her parents and
grand-mother, her uncle and then the kids in Vienna where she goes to French
school. She feels guilt for leaving her family in Iran while she is safely in
Vienna and she experiences growing pains. Her journey is depicted in gritty greys and strong black lines with obvious contrasts and simplicity.
One glaringly obvious difference between the graphic novel Persepolis and the film is the order in which the story is told and the use of narration to describe more completely the history, politics and emotions of the main character Marji. Instead of the stories of Marji's feeling boxed and linear they flow more fluidly.
The second difference I noticed between the book and the film was the use of color and lack there of.
In the book the illustrator uses only black and white and a very and embellishes very little. The book jacket and the cover and back are colorful using a saturated red tone. Black and white represent an absence of joy, flamboyance and freedom depicting a girls experiences with an Islamic Regime in the late 70s-90's. She is experiencing a lack of freedom and liberation that doesn't exactly scream pastels. The covers colors of red and navy symbolize the danger and passion of the authors experiences.
In the film multiple colors fill the screen twice in the airport scenes to book-end her experiences leaving and returning Iran.
All and all I really enjoyed reading Persepolis and watching the film and I would recommend it to anyone weather they are interested in animation or just want to see a great film/novel. :)

Final Project Info
LIFE ON THE EDGE
Episode1: Battery Envy
-->
Animation Final
Project Idea
I’m going to make a soap opera in
stop motion animation using items found in my bathroom and I’m enlisting a
group of my friends to do the voices.
The scenery will be my bathroom and
a cabinet. I’m going to make a bed out of a plastic container and cotton balls.Their will also be a scene shown in the park while they take a walk.
Characters
Venus (23 years old) = Female razor
Venus was born wealthy. She never
needed of anything and was always well taken care of. Her parents (Sensor and
Parker D.) expect her to marry as rich as they are and are very discriminating
for their daughter of course.
Phil Fusion (24 years old) = Male razor
Fusion comes from a working class
family. His family is happy but poor.
He feels insecure about his
upbringing and lack of money and power(muscle) and fears he will lose Venus to a razor that has
more money,class and power.
Byron (24years old) = Male Electric Toothbrush
Byron is Fusions best friend and
confidant. When Fusion needs advise as to what to do about his relationship he
turns to Byron.
Norman Norelco (25) = Electric Body Hair Trimmer
Norman is an Ivy Leaguer and very
privileged. He’s a playboy, works out and is single and available and has
always wanted Venus. They once had a moment although he is too superficial for
her. She prefers Fusion. Norman
Storyline
Day1
Venus and Fusion are living day by
day happily in the bathroom. The beginning scene finds them eating dinner.
Dinner consists of hairs for dinner followed by shaving cream for dessert.
Afterward they are found showering and then going to bed.
Day 2
Venus and Fusion are taking a walk
when they come across Norman Norelco walking his dog (played by a nail clipper)
Norman has just got a job on Wall
Street and he is bragging about it to Venus and Fusion. He is buff from all his
working out and mentions that he’s going to have to juggle going to the gym
with his new job. He will be making the big bucks and Phil feels more and more jealous and insecure.
Day3
Phil Fusion goes to meet his friend
Byron (played by the electric toothbrush) at a bar and he says how jealous he
is of Normans MBA and buff body and how he feels that if he doesn’t do
something soon he’s going to lose his girlfriend to Norman. While they are
sitting at the bar a cute pink toothbrush babe walks by and Byron gets really
excited. He buzzes and Phil gets an idea.
Day4
Phil appears at home and he looks
different to Venus. He had implants. (batteries attached to him someway) He
asks her what she thinks of his new body and newly acquired power and she tells
him that he was perfect the way he was. He should not try to change himself for
her.
